DIY Reusable Heat Pack

Soothe aches and stay warm, naturally

Warm up this winter with your very own eco-friendly heat pack! Made with natural ingredients from our store and a few bits you likely have at home, this DIY project is easy, plastic-free, and reusable again and again.

What You’ll Need:

From Refill Nation:

  • Organic Brown Rice (or quinoa, or flaxseed – all work well)
  • Dried Lavender (optional – for a calming scent)
  • Essential Oils (optional – like lavender or peppermint)

From Home:

  • A clean cotton fabric scrap or old pillowcase (approx. 30cm x 15cm for a standard pack)
  • Needle & thread or sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Funnel or spoon
  • Pins or clips

Instructions:

1. Make the Pouch

  • Fold your fabric in half, right sides together, to form a rectangle.
  • Sew around the edges, leaving a 5cm gap on one side.
  • Turn the pouch right side out.

2. Fill with Goodness

  • Using a funnel or spoon, fill the pouch about ⅔ full with rice or your filler of choice.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of dried lavender for a calming aroma.
  • Optionally, add 4–6 drops of essential oil (e.g., lavender for relaxation or peppermint for a soothing touch). Mix gently.

3. Sew It Shut

  • Fold the raw edges of the opening inwards and sew securely shut.

How to Use:

  • Microwave: Heat for 1 - 2 minutes or until warm (not hot).
  • Oven: Wrap in foil and heat at 100°C for 10–15 minutes.

Always test heat before applying to skin and avoid overheating.

Tips:

  • Use organic cotton or linen fabric to stay plastic-free.
  • Store in a dry place between uses.
  • To clean, spot clean the fabric and allow it to dry fully before reheating.
