About Buckwheat Groats

Buckwheat originated in China thousands of years ago and is a staple of many Asian and European cultures. In Japan, soba noodles are made with it. In France, gallettes and blinis are made with it. Buckwheat is not related to wheat, despite its name. This seed belongs to the same family as rhubarb and sorrel. Buckwheat is a gluten-free food and is an excellent option for people who avoid conventional wheat products. This tiny seed is packed with beneficial antioxidant flavonoids, including rutin, which may help prevent bad cholesterol and heart disease. In addition to iron, potassium, manganese, magnesium, calcium, and plenty of dietary fibre, it contains all the essential amino acids as well as vital complex carbohydrates.

Uses for Buckwheat Groats

When hulled buckwheat is roasted before being cooked, it produces a nuttier, earthier flavor. Mix it in with other nuts, seeds, dried fruits, honey, or maple syrup as a deliciously crunchy base for homemade granola. Buckwheat hulls are delicious in raw food recipes for energy bars and balls, vegan chocolate creations, and even in cakes and slices to give them a biscuit-like texture. Hulled buckwheat also gives bread a 'country' style when incorporated in the dough.
