Embarking on a journey through a country’s history can be perceived as an endless list of names, dates and events that are all seemingly disconnected. The sweep and detail of history means it can be perceived as overwhelming and daunting. Timelines and biographies are important, but they don’t allow us to see the intricate maze that is history.

By presenting our history as a metro map - with various ‘lines’ or themes and with each point along a line being a pivotal event, influential figure, or turning point in the historical narrative - we are able to visualise the rich tapestry that is our country’s story.

With 22 theme lines, featuring over 400 events, people, places and legislation, our infographic simplifies complex historical contexts and allows anyone to discover stories that they may not have previously known. Discover Papahurihia, the first Māori prophet; explore the economic line from initial trade between settlers and Māori, through the Waihi strike to Covid; or discuss the many intersections of Protest Movements, Prominent Women, Mana Motuhake and Social Change in the 1970s and ’80s.
