About Pearl Barley

Pearled barley is barley that has been stripped of its fibrous outer hull and polished to remove some or all of its bran layer. It is the most common form of barley mainly because it cooks faster and is less chewy than other less-processed forms of the grain such as barley groats, also known as pot barley and scotch barley. Pearl barley is comparable in caloric, protein, vitamin, and mineral content to wheat. It is the main ingredient of orzotto, an Italian dish, and one of the main ingredients of the Jewish dish cholent.

Uses for Pearl Barley

Generally, pearl barley is used in soups, stews, and potages. The primary ingredient of the Italian dish orzotto, as well as one of the main ingredients of Jewish cholent. You can also use it for risotto as an alternative to rice. The recipe will tell you how long to cook the barley.
